
The Ruta del Cacao (4G) project in Colombia is a major highway infrastructure project being developed by Cintra (which was awarded the contract for the project in 2015), while construction and design is being done jointly with Ferrovial. The 81 kilometers highway (part of a larger 238-kilometer highway), will connect the cities of Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja, and Yondó to the country’s main industrial centers.
With a construction of new roads, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure elements, improve economic development and create new employment opportunities in the region, which has is a significant producer of oil and reduce travel times.
Parts of the highways will include two tunnels, La Sorda and La Paz, measuring 5.96 kilometers in total and 34 new bridges and viaducts.
Some sections of the highway are already open to the public. The project has reached significant milestones, with some sections already open to the public and. Many parts are nearing completion. One section the highway, between La Virgen-La Lizama and La Fortuna-Puente La Paz reduces the average vehicle trip in the area by 15 minutes.
With significant financing received, some parts have been dedicated towards social initiatives aimed at engaging the local community, promoting road safety, and protecting the environment.
